Yummy, high protein, easy to make, batch prep perfect – did we hit all the important new year snack requirements? Oh, and a little bit of chocolate in the mix because January shouldn’t be devoid of indulgence in my opinion.
Between second trimester hunger and a busy start to the month with my best friend’s wedding, I needed a sweet snack on hand and I was spending way too much money buying countless bags of dairy-free peanut butter cups. So I remembered these froyo cubes from a few years back, and dreamed up a more dessert-y PB cup-ish version. But I made them nut-free with SunButter, naturally sweetened with bananas, and added more protein too because I am trying to hit 150g per day throughout my pregnancy and every little sweet bite helps!

How To Make Frozen Yogurt Protein Bites
One of my recipe resolutions for the year is to utilize the silicone ice cube tray more because it is a seriously underrated vessel for making no-bake treats in large batches. It’s simpler than a muffin pan and liners, and much faster than hand rolling individual balls/bites. And the cubes come out the perfect 2-3 bite size that’s easy to pack up and save in your fridge or freezer too.
In more exciting new year’s news, SunButter has a whole new look that you may have already spotted in the grocery store. And I am pumped to keep creating with my favorite sunflower seed butter in its sparkly new jar this year! So besides SunButter, let’s get into the rest of the ingredients in these yogurt protein bites…
Dairy-Free Ingredient List
- Granola. The crunchy bottom layer that adds delicious texture contrast. I personally like to use a plain variety (or ideally homemade!) but you could use one with mix-ins or flavors if that sounds good to you.
- Dark chocolate chips. Some melted, some on top. You could skip the melted drizzle on the bottom for a less dessert-y version, but personally I love the extra sweet snap mixed in with the granola base.
- Dairy-free yogurt. Despite yogurt being front and center in the title and recipe, these protein bites can definitely be made dairy-free. I personally used coconut yogurt for mine, but any variety of plain dairy-free yogurt will work. Or use greek yogurt for extra protein if you aren’t dairy-free.
- SunButter. A buttery “nutty” flavor-filled complement to the tangy yogurt, with just a little bit of sweetness if you opt for the Original variety like I did. Since we aren’t using a thick greek style yogurt in this dairy-free recipe, the SunButter also keeps the cubes super creamy and smooth to bite.
- Protein powder. You can totally skip this ingredient if high-protein isn’t your goal, but this is a super easy way to bump up the protein content and it blends in so well. I like using a plain/unsweetened variety, but vanilla would be great too. Plant based or not, whatever you like.
- Banana. Sliced and submerged in the protein yogurt mixture adds some extra fruit sweetness and flavor.
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1: Gently crush the granola, this is one instance where you don’t want big hefty chunks. Then spoon about 1-2 teaspoons in the bottom of each ice cube cavity. Just enough to cover the bottom in a single layer, you don’t want to take up too much space.
Step 2: Melt the chocolate and drizzle a little bit over each granola square. Then gently tap the whole tray to distribute the chocolate so it mixes with the granola and creates almost a crunch bar-ish crust.
Step 3: Blend the yogurt mixture – yogurt, SunButter, and protein powder. It will get thinner as you blend and should be smooth and pourable. Fill each cavity between 3/4 and almost full, leaving a little room to add the banana without overflowing it.
Step 4: Add the banana and chocolate chips, plus maybe an extra drizzle of SunButter.
Step 5: Freeze overnight, or at least 6 hours.
Tips For Customization and Substitutions
- Use chocolate granola as the base, and even skip the melted chocolate. I personally like the chocolate shell effect, but you could make things slightly healthier with this swap.
- Use a flavored yogurt, or blend fruit in with the yogurt to flavor it yourself. Any of the berry flavors or vanilla would be my top picks.
- Use chocolate protein powder for a chocolate froyo effect. Or salted caramel protein powder would be really delicious.
- Add other fruits. Banana isn’t the only option, berries would be really yummy tossed in too.
- Add nuts or seeds or coconut on top. Or any other ice cream topping you think sounds good.
Combine all those options together and there really are hundreds of different possible variations!

Ways To Enjoy These Frozen Yogurt Protein Bites
Any and all times are appropriate, but I especially love them as a little pre-workout boost or post-workout snack. I also love them as a sweet treat after dinner when I’m craving ice cream but a) don’t have any or b) would be too chilly eating a whole bowl. As an afternoon lunch dessert. As I’m running out the door. With protein, fat, carbs, and fiber they are a very well balanced snack for most any occasion.
