I don’t know about you but when it comes to completely irresistible, too easy to make, too easy to devour by the handful, never wanna be without, crispy delicious chocolate treats, puppy chow is number one. I feel un-classy admitting it, but truth is truth. So here’s what I did: took the whole puppy chow (a.k.a. muddy buddies) concept > transformed it into bars > swapped peanut butter for CHOCOLATE SunButter > created the best version of puppy chow you could ever imagine. So thank/blame me later.
How To Make Ridiculously Good Puppy Chow Bars
And the best (but also maybe most dangerous) part about this whole cereal-treat-turned-bar-treat situation is that it’s actually easier to make in bar form. Just six ingredients, minimal effort, nut-free and vegan, much less powdered sugar flying all which ways in my experience.
A Very Delicious Ingredient List
- Cereal. Rice Chex is obviously the classic choice here, but truly any cereal you have or love can be deliciously coated in chocolate and sugar dusted to puppy chow bar perfection.
- Chocolate SunButter. This stuff on it’s own? IRRESISTIBLE. This stuff melted down with more chocolate and tossed with cereal and coated in powdery sweetness…I HAVE NO WORDS. If you haven’t tried Chocolate SunButter yet, please please please upgrade your life already and order some.
- Coconut oil. We just need a little bit to make the chocolate mixture a cereal coating perfect consistency.
- Chocolate chips. I used semi-sweet, but dark chocolate would be just fine too. And for those of you doing the math at home, yes that does make these puppy chow bars DOUBLE chocolate.
- Vanilla extract. As any good chocolate recipe requires.
- Powdered sugar. Because puppy chow/muddy buddies in any form would not be complete without their finger-licking sweet sugar frost on top. (But if you want to avoid refined sugar, they will still be so very tasty if you skip this step!)
Tips For Perfect Puppy Chow Bars
- Use your hands and don’t over-mix. Cereal is fragile and we don’t want crumbs, mix gently until evenly coated and (I know it’s messy but) hands really do work best.
- Press into the pan VERY firmly. To avoid breakage when cutting, place a piece of wax paper on top and press the cereal mixture into the pan well.
- Dust right before slicing/serving. The powdered sugar will slowly dissolve into the chocolate with time, so I recommend dusting the bars right before you want to eat.
